Are You a Micro Business?

Defining Micro Business

So what constitutes a micro business? While there are many definitions for the term, the most common are businesses that have between 1-10 employees.   They also typically have an annual marketing spend of $500 per year, and need the products and tools to look professional on a small budget.  These businesses are Vistaprint’s core customer.

There are roughly 50 million micro businesses with less than 10 employees between North America and Europe.  Of those, over 80% don’t actually have paid employees and 90% have one or less full-time employees.  And of the companies with less than 10 employees over half have annual revenues of less than $25,000 per year. These are companies like massage therapists or tennis instructors or start-up rock bands, home-based consultants, plumbers and the hundreds and hundreds of other categories of micro businesses that we all rely on every day.

I truly appreciate this topic because it's one that certainly doesn't get much attention.  I've been in the computing industry since 2000 - a "minority" as they call it - as a female and a Veteran. Independence, when it comes to running a business in this competitive field is what drives most of my decisions.  But I'm not in it all alone (so to speak).  A great deal is spent researching, soliciting help from other small biz's, SBA, local business assistance programs etc., and also partnering with corporations such as Microsoft.  The resources are out there in abundance, but the time, effort, and implementation has to be positively incorporated on a consistent basis.  Throughout these years, I've had to temporarily hire employees in order to fulfill my business goals; but it's a juggling game and a financial risk for me, especially when an employee either fails to produce or takes your hard earned vision and goes astray.  In short, it's an invigorating journey - and one that you have to truly enjoy, nourish, and be devoted to.

Tips for Self-employed Individuals

If you are in business for yourself, or carry on a trade or business as a sole proprietor or an independent contractor, you generally would consider yourself self-employed and you would file IRS Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business or Schedule C-EZ, Net Profit From Business with your Form 1040.

Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about self-employment:
Self-employment can include work in addition to your regular full-time business activities, such as part-time work you do at home or in addition to your regular job.

If you are self-employed you generally have to pay Self-employment Tax. Self-employment tax is a social security and Medicare tax primarily for individuals who work for themselves. It is similar to the social security and Medicare taxes withheld from the pay of most wage earners.

You can deduct the costs of running your business. These costs are known as business expenses. These are costs you do not have to capitalize or include in the cost of goods sold but can deduct in the current year.To be deductible, a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary. An ordinary expense is one that is common and accepted in your field of business.

A necessary expense is one that is helpful and appropriate for your business. An expense does not have to be indispensable to be considered necessary. In addition, you must be able to substantiate your expense..

Hope this info helps

Just found your blog and am definitely a micro business (freelance copywriter/magazine writer/editor/ghostwriter). When it comes to writing, I do it all. Need new business cards after I moved, though! Keeping my home address off these so I won't need to order again until I run out. ;)

Yes, I'm just starting my business.. I just got my business cards from Vista and am trying to get my website up and running. I wondered if there was a difference between "home-based business" and "Micro Business" but I guess maybe there isn't. I make natural soaps, lotions, body washes and such. I'm new to this and still have to learn all about the law's, taxes and stuff about running a business. I was doing it for a hobby and thought I should turn this into a business since I figure I can't trust the government to keep the SSI going (which is what I live on being disabled and having two special needs sons). I'm already checking out some of the sites you people have posted here. :) We Micro people gotta help hold each other up. :) Right now it's just me running my business along with a million other things I do being a single parent and disabled my self. I can use all the help with understanding the in's and out's there is I can get. Blessings

My husband and I own a microbusiness. It can be tough with the economy but we do very little advertising so I'm sure that would boost sales incredibly. I love the fact that there are so many resources for micros on the web. Even to help sell your micro. We just listed our company on thbizseller.com

I am definitely a micro-business, and micro-businesses are my core customers as well. Thanks for the super post and super graphic!

http://www.simple-web-consulting.com/ is a micro business as describe on this article. And loving it.

Micro business? Yes, that's www.theblueandwhitecottage.com, too! Thousands of speciality gifts and collectibles from mom's "up North" successful gift shop, The Blue Cottage, is now being placed online. I'm on the learning curve while attempting to help mom with varied inventory. Retailing/shopping sure has changed in my lifetime. I will continue to check in here, looking for ideas. Come visit the website and offer suggestions. Thanks.

Yes I'm a micro business, in fact I'm a micro business that supports other micros! My company, Your Simple Bookkeeper, primary target market is the micro business community offering bookkeeping support and services starting at $35 - $199 per month. We also help MB find accounting software solutions that meet both their financial and pocketbook needs.

Recently we launched a "Micro Business Resource Center" on facebook while our website is being redesigned to pull in resources (such as this) specifically catered to Micro Business education. We provide webinars, live chats and more all in support of this group! Micros Rock!

I am trying to find out how to set up my e-commerce so that my customers can choose the items step by step. For example they pick a greeting card, then if they choose they pick a gift, then if they choose they pick a cake, then if they choose they pick flowers from the selections I have for them. After all their selections are made they give me some info, pay for their order and so forth. I know this can be done but I do not know how. Vista print does it when one creates their business cards. My concept is the same but the product is totally different. What I am offering is a total gift delivery service, but I need the customer to pick the items they want delivered. Any help out there will be appreciated.

I think google checkout can help you with that. Do you have a website already? If not you can get a free one on freewebs.com. We have one but we just registered our domain for two years (think it was around $20) not bad at all. Hope this helps

I never thought what to call myself other than an independent rep. So now I can say I'm a microbusiness. I represent a video communication company that is changing the way we communicate and do business.

Yes, I am launching a microbusiness that will compete with the big boys! Next week, we will begin selling Cookbook, Health, Inspirational, Investing, and Recreational ebooks on my website.

Then I will slowly add budding, newer authors with inspirational life stories to share. Tragically, these 'average joes' might not have a chance to publish their encouraging testimonies other than through ebooks or print-on-demand.

I am a seven year teacher who wanted to enter the business world for myself. Also, I have written my own novel in 2002 called Treachery by Chris Stephens. I've been building this web business for two weeks and I am proud to promote literacy and self-improvement.

Obviously, I am signing up for Yellowbook, completing a website, printing business cards, finding links for my site, and it seems neverending. Yet I am persevering to help my wife, two kids, and I gain a greater financial independence.

Come see us at http://stevesebookgallery.vpweb.com, and I'm sure you'll be impressed. I built the website myself using Vistaprint's valuable tools.

Steve

i guess you would consider me a micro business as it is just me and my wife. i do the labor. she does the marketing and bookkeeping. i pay her with love so it is just me! lol. i am new to this stuff and need all the guidance i can get. your site has really enlightened me to know what is out there and what i can do to enhance my business potential. thanks VistaPrint.

Yes, I am a micro-business for sure. My husband and I are nutritionist and personal trainers. We know in this economy, everyone needs to be healthy, and most can’t afford big gym memberships, let alone a trainer. We've made the entire lower level of our home a gym where everyone receives personal trainer at an affordable rate! Many thanks to vista for helping us get the word out to make the world a healthier place to live!

I am a Micro Business. I believe that my marketing will make or break me. Another Micro Business recommended your site. I am having trouble getting the correct size pictures. Also am challenged getting high resolution-especially when I use MS Office to add text and frames for my projects. Can anyone help???

I want to offer magnets and postcards to my customers. Spent $80 on my first batch of business cards.. will not be doing that again.

Thanks Vista!

Yes, I am a micro business. I am a lace wig designer and trainer. Vista print has made buying marketing materials very easy for me.

I love this idea, thank you vista print fot helping me grow my buisness on a budget. This means a lot to me during this diffulcult economy. Many buisnesses have this great oppurtunity and it feels good!

I run an event photography and portrait firm in Houston Texas, I'm the only "full time" employee, and I hire people by the hour for large events, cover the small ones myself. The only advertising I have is by work of mouth (and some snazzy business cards in two weeks, if you guys come through) but I'm always looking to expand!

Yes... I am. I was referred to your site by a google ad words rep, when I explained I needed to create a website in the most cost effective way possible. I saw you cater to businesses that have a annual marketing budget starting at $500, I can now be classified as a micro business. Hooray!! Finally I've found a company that can hopefully give me much needed HONEST professional direction and guidance in creating an effective internet website & presense that I had hoped for with the last web guy that cost me $4,000 and got me knowhere due to my lack of knowledge about marketing my brand on the internet.I'm looking foward to working with your staff of professionals who truly care about the little guy in business and is willing to share thier lifes experience & successes, to help us get a jump start!! Regards Ed A

yes...my husband designs and creates handmade wood urns for people and pets. Micro business is a perfect term for our company since we just started it less than 2 years ago and it is just my husband mostly doing all the work. Any help with marketing will be useful for our business...we do have a website we had designed and hope it will bring in new clients.

Yes! I don't know why I've never thought about it before, but micro business is the term I've been looking for. Thank you for bringing up the obvious.

Yes, I would say that I have a Micro business. Myself and two other partners have a Drafting Design service. There are no employees as of yet, but we have high hopes on getting the word out about our company.
Any suggestions on more advertising would be greatly be appreciated.
