Small business, loving what you do

Small business, loving what you do

Earlier today, we asked our Facebook community how they keep themselves motivated to run their business.

Unlike many of our Micro Business Tips Thursday queries where the community offers varying answers, today we had a similar statement from our fans: Love what you do.

So with that we have to ask – do you love what you do, or are you motivated by something else?

Use an offer on the back of your business cards

Earlier today, we asked the Vistaprint Facebook community for a tip to help small business owners’ business cards stand out among their competitors.

While we got a number of great ideas from our community, we had to choose one winner. The top tip was very near and dear to us from Ivette Muller:

“Put an offer on the back of the card, either for the recipient to pass along to a referral,” posted Mueller.

At Vistaprint, we’re fans of having an offer on the back of business cards and used to print “Business Cards are FREE at www.vistaprint.com!” on our free business card offering.

Tips Thursday: Seasonal Demand in Small Business

Since we celebrated Memorial Day on Monday and kicked off summer, the team started discussing how micro businesses experience seasonal demand and how they account for it. For this edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we asked our Facebook community if their business relied on seasonal demand. Our favorite response came from Roger Taylor.

Roger says, “Some of our business is seasonal, we cater to the hikers and campers in the spring and summer, in the fall we cater to the hunters. We have been able to bring in more products for year round sale, however, everything we hand make for the most part is spring, summer, and fall. This has forced us to diversify our products for the late fall and winter months. So far it has been successful.”

What do YOU think? Do you diversify your products based on seasonal demand? Tell us in the comments section.

The Benefits of Business Cards

The Benefits of Business Cards

In honor of National Small Business Week, this week’s Facebook and blog posts have all centered around the first step to building a small business — business cards! For this edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we asked our Facebook community what they thought the biggest benefit to using business cards was, and we received a number of great responses. We’ve highlighted a few of our favorites here:

Jerry Wolf ‎ “Leads, lead, leads!”

Jesy Anderson “Branding, recognition and like Jerry said, leads!”

Connie McClammy “Great ice breaker!!”

What do YOU think? What is the biggest benefit you’ve seen from using business cards? Tell us in the comments section.

Describe your small business management style in one word

Earlier today we asked our Facebook community to describe their business management style in one word. Below is a word cloud of the responses:

How would you describe your business management style?

Small Business Green Tip: Use Waste as Mulch

In this week’s edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we tapped the Vistaprint Facebook community for their top green tip for their business.

This week’s top answer came from Brandon Lee Fiscus, who finds ways to be green inside and outside of the office:

“My way of being green with my small business is that I use my Square to take payments. Which allows for a receipt to be sent either through email or text message. This is convenient and green with no receipt paper needed or power to be used for the printer. Another way I stay green with my business is that I use all my shredded paper work and files as mulch in my garden at home. Every little helps.”

Do you email receipts instead of printing or have you used shredded paper as mulch in your garden?

We’d love to hear your tip in the comments below.

Small business tax tip: organization is key

In this week’s edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we tapped the Vistaprint Facebook community for their top tax tip. As always they came back with a number of great answers, so it was tough selecting a winner.

This week’s top answer came from Melanie Lambe, who advised that organization is key:

“Make a file for each category of expense. As you get each receipt detail it and file it right away in the appropriate file. When tax time comes most of your prep work is done.”

Do you follow Melanie’s strategy or do you have another can’t miss tax tip for small business owners?

Three tips to make your small business stand out this spring

In this week’s edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we asked the Vistaprint Facebook community how they planned on standing out from their competition this spring. We received a number of great responses and decided to go with three answers instead of our usual one.

  1. “I’m using my business cards as rewards cards as well this year. I am going to mark them every time they book a photo session, and let my clients earn free stuff! They won’t “lose” it if it has more value!” – Stephanie Lewis Barzee
  2. “Have a home-based business. Sending a half-sheet, full-color brochure to EVERYONE on my street, including a 20% discount when they mention the brochure. Having a 3 ft. tall x 5 ft. wide sign in the front yard with 4 in letters is also helpful.” – Connie McClammy
  3. “Customer service, customer service, customer service ….” – Sandie Markland

Are you using any of these three methods to stand out among your competitors? Or are you using another method? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Expanding Your Facebook Presence

For this week’s edition of Micro Business Tips Thursday, we asked our Vistaprint Facebook community about, well, Facebook!  Specifically, we wondered what one piece of advice our Likers would offer other small business owners looking to expand their business on Facebook. As usual, we got a number of great responses (click here to see them all), but our top answer came from Victoria G. Redler, the owner of Daydream Massage Center in LaPlace, Louisiana. Her advice revolves around making an effort to engage with your customers.

“Make comments and keep in touch as much as possible, stay on their minds and so will ur business.”

Do you agree with Victoria? Is the key to expansion on Facebook (and beyond) talking with your customers, and staying top of mind? Tell us in the comments section!

Small Business, Big Break

In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, this week’s Tips Thursday had us wondering about luck. Specifically, we were wondering what lucky break did those on our Facebook community get to start their businesses. As usual, we received a number of great responses (click here to see them all), but we had to pick just one to feature.

Our winning answer comes from Michelle Lyn Woolery Hanavan, who talked about something that can be crucial when deciding whether or not to start a business: consumer demand.  “I am a photographer, and people were OFFERING to pay me for sessions; so I jumped in and decided to just finally go for it. It’s been great ever since!” Michelle runs Michelle Hanavan Photography in Hamilton, Ohio.
